The AP Stolen easy chair with ottoman, also known as the model AP 19 Papa Bear, was designed by Hans J. Wegner in Denmark in 1951 and later put into production. This armchair differs from its historical predecessors with its open expression, as Wegner took into account construction and functionality considerations to craft its elegant shape. The armrests, disconnected from the seat, grant sitters with the freedom to move around. To keep the fabric clean and avoid soiling, Wegner added wooden claws at the end of the armrests. The chair became known as the 'Papa Bear' when a journalist fittingly observed that it looks like a bear hugging the sitter from behind. Manufacturer Anker Pedersen appreciated the nickname so much that it stuck. Hans Wegner was a well-known and esteemed furniture designer, born in Denmark in 1914. He started his apprenticeship at the age of fourteen, where he began working under Danish master cabinetmaker H.F. Stahlberg. After moving to Copenhagen, he attended the School of Arts and Crafts between 1936 and 1938. Wegner began collaborating with designer Arne Jacobsen and others, and in 1943, he established his own studio. Wegner was known for his understanding of materials, construction techniques, and functionality while creating expressive and exciting designs. His pieces were both organic and sensuous while adhering to functionalism principles. He contributed his works to many notable buildings around the world.
