Hans J. Wegner's FH 4283 China chair from 1944 is a true masterpiece of furniture design. This particular version, made in 1977 by Fritz Hansen in Denmark, is a rare find, crafted from exquisite European walnut and limited to a production run of only 250 pieces, each one numbered with a metal plaque. The chairs also have their original black leather seat cushions. What makes the China chair so distinctive is that it was the only solid wood chair in Fritz Hansen's collection at the time, marking a departure from their usual materials. Wegner took inspiration from ancient Chinese chairs from the 17th and 18th centuries and spent several years perfecting his own modern interpretation. The result is a timeless classic that perfectly captures Wegner's expressive and sculptural approach to functionalism.
