In 1950, when this iconic piece was first released, the furniture industry had never seen such an unusual combination of materials: rope, white-varnished steel, and sheepskin. Hans Wegner sought to demonstrate his ability to design innovative, practical, and comfortable furniture with any material at hand. Initially, the design received mixed reviews when unveiled at a Copenhagen exhibition, with Kaare Klint famously describing it as reminiscent of a gynaecologist's office. However, it quickly became a favourite of the fashion world, with models posing on its tightly wound string seat in magazines. The chair, known as the Flaglinestol or Flag Halyard string-wrapped lounge chair, became a 21st-century icon. The story goes that Wegner found the perfect lean-back position for seaside repose at the beach in 1949, which inspired him to create a sturdier version for indoor use. The ergonomic, spaceship-like form of the chair still looks innovative today, more than 70 years later. Its bottom frame features a white-varnished steel structure with beechwood leg caps and splayed legs connected by a stretcher to establish a sturdy base. The top frame, made of chrome-plated steel, serves as the frame for the stretched halyard rope, a material commonly used to raise and lower flags on external halyard flagpoles. The chair is finished with a cognac leather head pillow secured to the back, and sheepskin to soften the industrial shape of the steel. The chair was first presented at The Arts & Crafts Spring Exhibition at the Designmuseum Danmark in 1950 and was later manufactured by Danish brand Getama, albeit in small quantities. It went out of production in the late 1980s, but PP Møbler picked up production in 2000. This particular model is from the original series. The chair is in good vintage condition, with some wear and tear marks on the frame due to age and use. The head pillow has recently been reupholstered in cognac leather. Additionally, the item can be re-upholstered in a fabric of choice upon request. Hans Wegner, the designer of this iconic chair, is considered as one of the most influential Scandinavian designers, with a legacy of more than 500 chair designs. He was a pioneer of the organic functionality style, which combined a variety of natural materials and pushed traditional joinery techniques to new limits. His designs were known for their simple, functional exterior, revealing the inner soul of each furniture piece.
