In 1963, when Hans J. Wegner first presented the CH07 shell chair, it received mixed reviews from critics, and the general public was hesitant to embrace its avant-garde appearance. Limited production ensued due to underdeveloped manufacturing techniques. However, when Carl Hansen & Søn reintroduced the chair in 1998, it swiftly gained popularity with a new generation of consumers. The chair's unique design boasts a light, wing-like seat and curved backrest supported by a three-arched leg frame. The seat and backrest are formed using upholstered veneer, providing ample comfort to the user. To create a sturdy, distinct shape, the chair's laminated legs consist of multiple layers of veneer, with the two front legs comprising a single element. As stated by Wegner, a chair's appeal should lie in its comfort, lack of a "backside," and beauty from all angles- all of which are clearly embodied in the shell chair.
