When Hans J. Wegner first revealed the design of the CH07 Shell chair in 1963, it was met with mixed reviews. While many critics loved its Avant Garde look, the general public was hesitant to accept its unique expression. Limited production resulted from the less-developed production techniques of that time. However, when Carl Hansen & Sà¬∏n reintroduced the chair in 1998, it quickly gained broad public admiration amongst a new generation. The chair's distinctive floating lightness is achieved through a wing-like seat and a curved backrest held by a frame with three arched legs. Its signature seat and backrest are made from upholstered form-pressed veneer, providing generous comfort to anyone who sits in it. The chair's laminated legs consist of several layers of veneer, and the two front legs are made from a single element for a unique and sturdy form. The Shell chair is a clear representation of Wegner's belief that a chair should be comfortable, have no backside, and look beautiful from all angles. This particular model features a Walnut Oil frame finish and a Thor 307 Leather seat finish. It is made from wood, foam, and upholstery and measures 32.6in D x 36.2in W x 29.1in H. It is also available in different frame and seat finish options, including different wood finishes, leather and fabric groups.
