Upon unveiling the CH07 Shell chair design in 1963, there was a divided response with critics applauding the avant-garde appearance while the public was hesitant to embrace its unique expression. The chair had limited production due to mixed reviews and underdeveloped production techniques of the era. However, when Carl Hansen & Søn reintroduced the Shell chair in 1998, it immediately gained popularity among a new generation and received widespread admiration. The chair's wing-like seat and curved backrest held by a frame with three arched legs achieve a floating lightness, while the signature upholstered form-pressed veneer seat and backrest cradle the user in generous comfort. The chair's laminated legs comprise several layers of veneer, and the two front legs are a single element, creating a unique and stable form. The Shell chair reflects Wegner's philosophy that a chair should be comfortable, have no backside and look beautiful from all sides and angles.
