The CH78 lounge chair, affectionately known as the Mama Bear chair, was originally introduced in 1954 as an extension of Wegner's CH71 'Mini Bear' chair design from 1952. Characterized by a series of inviting curves that provide a warm and comforting embrace, the CH78 lounge chair strikes a unique balance between soft, rounded curves and dynamic geometries, accentuated by fine details such as the signature wooden 'claws' on the armrests. Despite being a lightweight and modern lounge chair, it offers exceptional ergonomic support for the neck, back, and body, encouraging relaxation and rest. The CEO of Carl Hansen & Søn, Knud Erik Hansen, notes that the CH78 lounge chair perfectly aligns with the company's modern collection, and follows on naturally from the CH71 lounge chair and CH72 sofa introduced in 2018, all of which embody comfort in a limited space. Hans J. Wegner was part of the first wave of Danish Modern design, which saw designers focus on creating furniture that was simple, functional, and showcased the inner soul of each piece. Wegner was born in Tønder, Denmark, in 1914 and began his apprenticeship in furniture design at the age of 14. After attending the School of Arts and Crafts in Copenhagen, he set out to become one of the most influential furniture designers of his time. The CH78 lounge chair is made of solid wood for the legs and armrests, with the seat and back crafted from solid beech and foam. It is available in various upholstery options, including Fiord 0151, Fiord 0191, Fiord 0271, Fiord 0782, Fiord 0961, and Fiord 0991. Other wood finish options include Oak/soap and oak/white oil.
