Hans Wegner designed the Danish armless bench, model JH555, which features a solid teak frame with an angled cross stretcher. The bench has been newly upholstered in a classic Scandinavian striped wool textile by Tove and Edvard Klint Larsen. Originally, the bench was handmade by Johaness Hansen for the Cabinetmakers Guild Exhibition of 1949. A US military serviceman purchased the bench at the exhibition and had it shipped back home via the US military. Johannes Hansen supplied the The Cabinetmakers Guild Exhibition with limited production handcrafted furniture beginning in 1949. Wegner explained that the Johannes Hansen workshop was small, with only five or six assistants. They were not used to producing large numbers and would have been happy if they could sell just the four chairs made for the show. The bench, model JH555, was an innovative contribution to the attempt to abolish large heavy upholstered sofas. This breakthrough occurred in 1949 and was shown at the The Cabinetmakers Guild Exhibition. During the same exhibition, Wegner also had breakthroughs in his work, including the round Chair JH501 and the Folding Chair JH512. The bench has a seat height of 15.50 inches and is a nice addition to any space.
