This oak dining chair, which has been reupholstered, is a design that dates back to the early career of Hans J. Wegner - one of the most renowned Danish designers of all time. The chair was first manufactured by Plan Møbler in 1940/1941 for the iconic city hall in Aarhus, which was designed by Arne Jacobsen and where Wegner served as assistant in the creation of a wide range of items, including furniture, lamps, and ash trays. This chair is among the first designs that Wegner crafted for the city hall. The chair bears an inscription that indicates the lengthening of the legs of the chair and is dated November 30th, 1957. It has undergone restoration, refinishing, and reupholstering to ensure it is in excellent condition. Wegner's success was due to his unique ability to create functional, visually striking designs. He is most famous for his chairs - a staggering 500 in total - that bring together elegant aesthetics and practical applications to perfection, notably shown in his China Chair from 1945. This design catapulted him to international recognition, as the chair was displayed on national US television during the 1961 presidential debate between Kennedy and Nixon. Wegner's contributions to Danish furniture design modernism are legendary, with his J16 rocking chair and JH513 chair being especially well-known and loved worldwide.
