This is a beautifully crafted bed designed by Gio Ponti in 1957, made from incredibly figured olive ash burl wood veneer. The bed features an "organized wall" headboard with floating shelves and single drawer nightstands, all topped with original reverse silvered VItreal glass stamped 1957. Additionally, the bed comes with a pair of enameled perforated brass articulating reading lamps that can be operated using the original brass control panels. The bed has been masterfully restored and is now ready to become a part of your home. It comes with an Original Certificate of Authenticity from the Gio Ponti Archives and is a perfect match to the dresser/chest of drawers with a mirror (see our separate listing ref. LU8866800243). However, please note that there might be some improvisation required while fitting an American mattress to a European bed frame. The inside dimensions of the mattress area are 66 inches wide by 77 inches head to toe, while an American Queen mattress is 60 x 80 and an Olympic Queen mattress is 66 x 80. Adaptive brackets can be made to extend the length of the bed to 80 inches, or the headboard can be mounted to the wall at your preferred height so that the platform sits freely 3 inches forward. If needed, we also have a quote from C. H. Beckley, New York, to make a new custom mattress with foundation. The wedge-shaped floating nightstands of the bed are 18 inches at their widest, and there is 78 inches between them. The bottom of nightstands is 18.25 inches above the floor, while the top of the nightstands is 23.5 inches above the floor. This bed has been referenced in various literature, such as Domus (Milan), no. 282, May 1953, Lisa Licitra Ponti's book Gio Ponti: The Complete Works 1923-1978, London, 1990, p. 195, and Charlotte and Peter Fiell's book Domus Vol. III 1950-1954, Cologne, 2006, p. 380, which feature similar examples of this bed.
