An exceptional office or desk chair, featuring a metal frame, and upholstered with black leather on both seat and backrest, is a rare find. The chair was originally designed by the renowned Italian master Gio Ponti in the 1930s, exclusively for offices located in Montecatini - a charming little city nestled near Florence in Tuscany. Gio Ponti was not only an icon of the modernist movement, but also a versatile personality exhibiting a profound influence on various design and architectural fields, including fine furniture, ceramics, education, office and residential buildings, and even publications. Born in Milan in 1891 and studying architecture at the Politecnico di Milano, Gio Ponti went on to assume roles as artistic director of Richard-Ginori porcelain factory, co-founder of Domus magazine, and curator of the Milan Triennale, among others. His lasting legacy is anchored in the numerous iconic works he created, such as the Pirelli Tower, the Institute of Mathematics of the University of Rome, Casa Marmont, and VIlla Donegani in Bordighera. Regardless of his fame and glory, Gio Ponti continued to work tirelessly until his eighties, with the Concattedrale Gran Madre di Dio in Taranto and the Denver Art Museum being among his later gems. He passed away in Milan on 16 September, 1979, leaving behind a remarkable oeuvre comprising furniture, ceramics, and various other objects.
