This elegant floor lamp, designed by Gio Ponti for Fontana Arte, is a stunning example of the model he originally created for the Hotel Parco dei Principi in Sorrento. Commissioned to design the hotel in 1959, Ponti constructed a modern complex with a distinctive blue and white color scheme that continues to impress visitors today. The Parco dei Principi lamp was designed with a blue shade to furnish the hotel's private and public spaces, and features an adjustable stem and lampshade for maximum functionality. The lamp's refined brass stem and transparent base give it an ethereal quality that perfectly complements the hemispherical white shade. Born in Milan and educated at the Polytechnic University of Milan, Ponti went on to become one of the most influential Italian designers of the twentieth century. His work as an architect, furniture designer, and artist has left an indelible mark on the design world, inspiring future generations of designers such as Paolo Buffa, Paco Muñoz, and Lina Bo Bardi, with whom he collaborated on several early projects.
