Gio Ponti was faced with the challenge of working with an existing, partially-built structure composed of two above-ground and two underground levels for the Hotel Parco dei Principi in Rome. Upon its purchase by the Neapolitan engineer and hotel entrepreneur Fernandes, Ponti collaborated with Ferdinando Chiaromonte to transform the structure into a hotel, opting to use a consistent color scheme of white and green both externally and internally. As a part of this project, Cassina produced a pair of armchairs in 1964 with a wooden frame and skai and alcantara upholstery, which remain in good condition and wholly original. This information can be found in publications such as G. Bosoni's "Made in Cassina," Domus 425 (April 1965), Centro Internazionale di Brera's "Gio Ponti Arte applicata," and Ugo La Pietra's "Gio Ponti." In summary, Ponti successfully overcame the challenges posed by the existing structure to bring his vision for Hotel Parco dei Principi to fruition, with the armchairs serving as a tangible representation of his work.
