This excellent modular sofa, designed by George Nelson (1908-1986) for Herman Miller, boasts a metal frame with square chrome-plated legs. While the tufted back displays some elements of classic furniture, the overall design is sharp, functional and minimalistic. The seats have been reupholstered and are covered in the original dark anthrazit fabric. The sofa's total width is 306cm, with three seats at 230cm wide and a 76 x 76cm table. Nelson, an architect, writer, lecturer and designer who was one of the pioneers of the Industrial Design movement in the United States, believed that furniture should not be created for the sake of the market, but rather from a place of complete conviction. He created 77 designs in his first year at Herman Miller and believed that the Industrial designer brought together all the arts. Recognized for his clean lines, open shapes and modest forms, Nelson fundamentally questioned the basis of furniture business.
