George Nelson was a renowned modernist designer who excelled in interior, industrial, and exhibition design. He pursued architecture at Yale University in the 1920s and gained recognition through his writings on design in various publications such as Architectural Forum, Interiors, and Fortune. Nelson joined forces with Herman Miller Furniture Company in 1945 as their lead designer, where he created a remarkable range of furniture designs and collaborated with esteemed designers such as Isamu Noguchi, Charles Eames, and Buckminster Fuller. Some of his iconic designs are the bubble lamp, ball clock, marshmallow sofa, and wall storage system. Additionally, Nelson curated several exhibitions, including the American National Exhibition in Moscow (1959) and the Chrysler Corporation display at the New York World’s Fair (1964). An excellent illustration of his early work is the vintage midcentury George Nelson walnut secretary, which features a drop-down work surface, storage/dividers, and shelving inside, along with three drawers below. It also boasts hairpin legs and chrome pulls, measuring 38.25" W x 24.85" D x 19.5" H when open.
