George Nelson, an architect by training, designed the Marshmallow Sofa in 1956. Though its appearance may be unconventional, the seat is surprisingly comfortable, and its upholstered elements can be easily removed and swapped. The sofa boasts a frame crafted from black lacquered steel and is upholstered in a range of colored faux leathers, including yellow, light blue, dark blue, light purple and light red. Nelson was a seminal figure in the design world, working with luminaries such as Eames, Saarinen, and Noguchi. He began his career as an architect and spent several years in Rome, where he rubbed elbows with princes and other exponents of the "International Style." After returning to the States, he worked as the editor of "Architectural Forum" and oversaw various important projects for Herman Miller Inc., including a modular office furniture system that showcased his architectural background. The Marshmallow Sofa is in great condition, is fully original, and even includes its original tag. It is even featured in the 2005 Taschen publication "1000 Chairs" by Charlottte and Peter Fiell on page 265.
