The Sundra coffee table is a stunning example of mid-century modern design and was created by the renowned Japanese-American architect, woodworker, and furniture maker George Nakashima. This beautiful piece of furniture was crafted using exquisite walnut wood, resulting in an elongated and low-set biomorphic table with an organic shape. The table is composed of three sections of walnut, which are adjoined by a slightly angled edge that overhangs three tapered conical legs. The table is marked with the name "Sundra" on the underside, with the Widdicomb manufacturer tag attached. George Nakashima was a highly respected figure in the world of furniture design, having earned a master's degree in architecture from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1931. He was known for his mastery of woodworking techniques, which he learned from carpenter Gentaro Hikogawa. One of Nakashima's most distinctive design features was his use of butterfly joints to join together multiple wood slabs, creating large-scale tables that were both functional and aesthetically pleasing.
