Gaetano Pesce's creations are typically innovative, contemporary, and boast a certain "happening" quality - an element of transformation inherent in the object. As an experimenter of diverse shapes and materials, Pesce embraces imperfection and flaws as an integral part of his design aesthetic, seeking to highlight them in order to promote uniqueness. One of his most notable works is the Umbrella chair, which he designed in 1995 for Zero Disegno. This easily transportable, lightweight chair can be converted into a walking stick by pressing a button, and then back into a chair by pressing the same button again. With spring legs that serve as shock absorbers, the Umbrella chair also creates a lovely swaying motion when seated upon. This award-winning design earned the Interior Design Magazine Award in 1995 and features the manufacturer's signature, as illustrated in the accompanying photo.
