Frank Lloyd Wright designed a limited edition lounge chair in the 1920s for the Tokyo Imperial Hotel. In 1996, Cassina, the owner of the FLW furniture catalog license, put a select number of Wright's furniture designs from the hotel into limited production. Each piece was signed and numbered with a label. The armchair was one of the "Imperial Collection" pieces, with only around 1,000 ever produced. It features its original upholstery and ornate woodwork at its plinth base. The chair can be purchased in leather or a few textile options, including solid Red and Blue. Cassina's limited run is little-known, and the chair will be shipped insured overseas in a custom-made wooden crate. The cost of transport to the US is Euro 1,275, which includes the front door delivery crate. David B. Stewart's The Making of Modern Japanese Architecture praises Wright's Imperial Hotel for its monumental spaces, despite the earthbound profile of the building. The hotel's character was displayed through a unique combination of ornament and plan, which Wright hoped to redefine architectural truth. Though the Imperial Hotel was a masterpiece, it was demolished in 1968 and replaced with a modern four-star hotel, leaving only the front facade at Meiji Mura. The Far Eastern Review noted that Wright sacrificed everything for his art, raising a monument to his genius while leaving the Japanese with the difficult task of making it financially successful.
