The Schumacher Imperial Peacock Textile, measuring 54" x 80", was originally designed by Frank Lloyd Wright for the now-demolished Imperial Hotel in Tokyo in the 1920s. The pattern was visible throughout the hotel, adorning large rugs, curtains, stained glass panels, and cast stone architectural details. However, Wright translated the design for his collaboration with Schumacher in 1955, resulting in a cotton/linen blend with an array of colors, including blue, pink, tan, periwinkle, coral, red, and lavender. Although the Imperial Hotel no longer stands, its front facade remains preserved at the Meiji Mura outdoor architectural museum near Nagoya. Wright's design for the hotel was praised for its ability to create grand spaces despite the building's limitations. The hierarchy of ornament was matched with a hierarchy of spatial arrangement, resulting in an unusual and charming effect. The building was also recognized as ahead of its time architecturally but behind in terms of patron comfort. Nonetheless, due praise was given to Wright's genius and the engineering talent that adhered to strictly straight lines and flat arches.
