The legendary "Barrel" chairs for Cassina, crafted from patinated wood and featuring a plush velvet seat, were initially designed by renowned architect Frank Lloyd Wright way back in 1937. This unique and enduring design had its origins in a previous creation dating back to 1904. The chair's barrel-shaped structure comprises a staggering 37 individual components that fit together with remarkable precision. This feat of engineering features a base and backrest fashioned from three sturdy wooden pieces bent at varying angles. These pieces are cut into two parts, perfectly counterbalanced to compensate for the pressures exerted during the steam-bending and drying processes. The two halves are subsequently bonded back-to-back with all the connecting joints intricately carved out of the wood. Frank Lloyd Wright was a man with a vision, unifying architecture and design with his remarkable talent. Natural materials in their original state defined his work, showcasing an eco-friendly approach to design. Despite his love of tech, he never lost sight of the importance of traditional craftsmanship. Wright's iconic buildings were just one part of his illustrious career - he also created bespoke furnishings and other custom design features. Our atelier has painstakingly refurbished the set of four chairs, reupholstering them with sumptuous burgundy velvet while preserving their original character - slight traces of age and use.
