Knoll's Frank Ghery-designed arm chairs, known as the "hat trick" collection, are a testament to the celebrated architect's affinity for incorporating his iconic building designs into his furniture creations. The chairs boast a unique construction in which the seat and structure are made from the same slender wood strips, resulting in an interwoven, basket-like design that offers both pliability and strength. Gehry drew inspiration from the rugged apple crates he played on as a child to develop this collection of bentwood furniture, which challenges conventional style by placing equal emphasis on form and function. The chairs feature a frame made from 2-inch-wide hard white maple veneers laminated to 6 to 9-ply thickness using high bonding glue. Each piece is incised and dated with Gehry's signature and the date of manufacture, adding a nice touch to the already striking design. The collection debuted at The Museum of Modern Art in New York after Gehry spent three years experimenting and exploring to perfect his vision.
