This is a limited edition of only 12 signed and numbered Chinese Artificial flower vases Z by Ettore Sottsass, edited by Design Gallery Milano in 1995. This particular piece is number 4 out of 12 and is in good original condition, with minor wear that is consistent with the item's age and usage, adding to its beautiful patina. Please note that flowers are not included. In 2005, a gold prototype was produced and used as an award for an international competition for design students, which was also held two years before Sottsass' passing. This very same prototype is held in Sottsass' portrait. Ettore Sottsass was a renowned Italian architect and designer of the late 20th century. He designed various items such as furniture, jewelry, glass, lighting, and office machines. Sottsass began his career as a design consultant for Olivetti in 1956, where he designed office equipment, typewriters, and furniture alongside Adriano Olivetti and his son Roberto. He gained recognition for bringing office equipment into popular culture through color, form, and styling. Sottsass and his colleagues won the prestigious Compasso d'Oro in 1960 for the Elea 9003, the first Italian mainframe computer. In 1968, Sottsass received an honorary doctoral degree from the Royal College of Art in London. While the Memphis movement attracted worldwide attention for its energy and flamboyance in the 1980s, Sottsass also established Sottsass Associati, his major design consultancy. The studio designed large architectural projects and industrial designs for international industries, including elaborate stores and showrooms for Esprit, identities for Alessi, exhibitions, interiors, consumer electronics in Japan, and furniture. The studio was built on the cultural guidance of Sottsass and the work of its young associates, who often opened their own studios. Today, Sottsass Associati is based in London and Milan, sustaining the studio's work, philosophy, and culture.
