The Tartar Table made of laminated wood was first crafted by Ettore Sottsass for Memphis Milano in the year 1985. Ettore Sottsass, who was born in Innsbruck in 1917, was a renowned architect and designer, widely recognized as one of the most influential personalities of the last century. He graduated in architecture from Politecnico di Torino in 1939 and contributed to every radical movement in design from the 1970s and 1980s. He founded the Memphis Group in 1981, which changed the face of Italian and global design radically. His outstanding achievements earned him numerous international awards, including the Golden Compass in 1959, and he even designed the first-ever laptop named "Valentina" for Olivetti. Sadly, he passed away in 2007 at the age of 90. The rise of Memphis Milano in the 1980s was a remarkable cultural phenomenon that transformed the creative and commercial principles of design. Starting from Milan, the group of young designers and architects, led by Ettore Sottsass, was joined by globally acclaimed designers and architects. Memphis redefined existing living parameters, manifesting an entirely new concept and expression of design by deploying new shapes, designs, and materials. It marked an era for the industry that expanded the creative horizons beyond imagination. Memphis still remains as an emblem of new design that influences production and various other sectors.
