An important, highly coveted, and iconic piece of late 20th Century design is up for sale: the delightful "Tahiti" Lamp. Designed by Ettore Sottsass in 1981 and produced by the Memphis Group in Milan, Italy, this seminal lamp is included in many major museum design collections worldwide. The design is wonderfully playful, featuring a polychrome enamelled metal "exotic bird" with a pivoting head mounted on a black and white confetti-patterned laminate and wood base. It is in excellent condition and in good working order, complete with a UK standard 3-pin plug and controlled by an in-line on/off switch. Sottsass was a prodigiously creative individual, excelling in industrial design, ceramics, architecture, magazine publishing, photography, and the design of graphics, jewelry, and interiors. He was a fixture on the European design scene from the postwar years in Italy until his death at age 90 in 2007. He was renowned for his ability to incorporate cultural references both contemporary and from centuries past, creating designs with emotional impact and elemental clarity akin to a kiss.
