The Ashoka table lamp was designed by Ettore Sottsass in Italy, 1981. It boasts a metal construction that has been lacquered in various colors, making it a limited edition piece. This particular lamp design is similar in form to Sottsass' "cactus" or "totem" furniture designs, like the Carlton room divider and the Casablanca sideboard. A reference to this lamp design can be found on page 316 of Fiell's 1000 Lights. Ettore Sottsass, an Italian architect and designer of the late 20th century, is widely recognized for his impressive body of work that includes designs for furniture, jewelry, glass, lighting, and office equipment.
