The limited edition 'lava glaze' ceramics, including two vases and a plate, were commissioned by the prominent Dutch department store 'De Bijenkorf' and produced by Bitossi (Montelupo) around 1958.†The plate measures 9.84 inches (25 cm) in diameter, the large vase measures 4.33 inches (11 cm), and the small vase measures 3.34 inches (8.5 cm). The plate is 2.36 inches (6 cm) high, the large vase is 6.29 inches (16 cm), and the small vase is 5.90 inches (15 cm). Despite showing signs of wear and aging, such as one small fleabite on the rim of the largest vase (as shown in the last picture), these pieces remain in good condition. † Renowned designer Ettore Sottsass Jr. (1917-2007) is widely regarded as one of the greatest designers of the 20th century. He founded his own design studio in Milan in 1947 after graduating from Politecnico di Torino. Throughout his illustrious career, he designed a diverse range of objects, spanning from architecture and art glass to office equipment and jewelry. Sottsass continuously reinvented himself over the years without sacrificing his unique, highly personal style characterized as colorful, mystical, and multicultural. These qualities were already evident in his early work from the 1950s, particularly in his lighting designs for Arredoluce and ceramics for Bitossi.†Similar models to those in this series can be found in F. Ferrari's Ettore Sottsass: Tutta La Ceramica (Turin 1996), p.41.
