The Shiva ceramic flower vase, designed by Ettore Sottsass circa 1973, has been edited by BD in Barcelona and is in great original condition with minor wear consistent with its age and use, which adds to its beautiful patina. Of special note, in 2005 a gold prototype was made and awarded to the winner of an international design competition for students. This very same prototype can be seen in Sottsass's portrait taken two years before his passing. Etore Sottsass was a late 20th-century Italian architect and designer whose vast body of work included furniture, jewelry, glass, lighting, and office machine design. His reputation was cemented when he began designing for the Italian company Olivetti in 1956, where he established a new benchmark for integrating color, form, and style into office equipment design. In 1960, Sottsass's Olivetti design team won the prestigious Compasso d'Oro award with the Elea 9003, the first Italian mainframe computer. In the 1980s, while the Memphis movement was captivating the world for its energy and flamboyance, Sottsass founded Sottsass Associati, a design consultancy that focused on architecture and design for large international industries. The studio's cultural guidance and the work of its many young associates, who often went on to open their own studios, continue to sustain Sottsass's philosophy and culture to this day.
