The Shiva ceramic vase designed by Ettore Sottsass circa 1973 and edited by BD in Barcelona is in good original condition with minor wear that adds to its beautiful patina. An impressive gold prototype was produced in 2005, two years before the legendary designer's death, and was awarded to an international competition for design students. This very same prototype is held by Sottsass in his portrait. Ettore Sottsass, born in Innsbruck, Austria, in 1917, was a renowned Italian architect and designer of the late 20th century. He showcased his diverse skills by designing furniture, jewelry, glass, lighting, and even office machines. Sottsass worked for Olivetti in 1956 and even won the prestigious 1960 Compasso d'Oro with the Elea 9003, the first Italian mainframe computer. Throughout his career, he successfully brought office equipment into popular culture through his use of colors, forms, and styles. Sottsass was recognized with honorary doctoral degrees and played an instrumental role in the creation of the Memphis movement. He established his design consultancy, Sottsass Associati, in 1980, which enabled him to design for large international industries and build architecture on a substantial scale. The studio designed everything from elaborate stores and showrooms for Esprit to furniture and consumer electronics in Japan. The studio's cultural guidance and the work conducted by its young associates, many of whom went on to open their own studios, continue to sustain the work, philosophy, and culture of Sottsass Associati, which is based in London and Milan.
