This stunning design was created by Ettore Sottsass in 1978 and was brought to life by the well-known Italian company Alessi. Born into a family of architects, Ettore Sottsass Jr. (1917-2007) studied in Turin and graduated from the city's Polytechnic Institute in 1939, before joining his father's firm in 1945. After setting up his own practice in Milan, he developed an interest in interior and industrial design. Sottsass' work with ceramics and jewelry is renowned for its emotional impact and his keen eye for color. His creative approach diverged from the dominant Rationalist movement, resulting in a diverse range of objects that possess a unique character. Sottsass' projects with Olivetti, where he designed famous typewriters like Praxis 48, Lettera 36 and Valentine, became legendary. He even designed Elea 9003, the first Italian computer, which garnered him a Compasso d'Oro award in 1959. Sottsass continued to evolve over time, gaining inspiration from contemporary avant-garde movements, experimenting with conceptual art, and creating experimental furniture pieces. In the early '80s, he founded the Memphis group, which focused on producing objects and furniture, and his own studio, Sottsass Associati, where he explored both architecture and design. Sottsass' collaborations and friendships with artists and critics have been immensely valuable throughout his career. In the '90s, he shifted his focus to architecture, primarily homes and urban planning. Sottsass' contributions to the field of design have earned him numerous awards and accolades, including the title of Chevalier de l'ordre des arts et des lettres in France (1992) and honorary degrees from Rhode Island School of Design (1993) and the Royal College of Art in London (1996).
