Ettore Sottsass was born in Innsbruck in 1917 and earned a degree in architecture from the Politecnico di Torino in 1939. He established the Memphis group in 1981, which considerably changed the landscape of Italian and global design. Memphis Milano, a cultural phenomenon of the 1980s that transformed creative and business logics in design, is noteworthy. Born from Ettore Sottsass's idea and a group of young designers and architects in Milan, and joined over the years by prominent designers from the international scene, Memphis completely altered the living parameters that were in place at the time.
