Growing up in Turin, Ettore Sottsass completed his studies in architecture at the Turin Polytechnic in 1939 before establishing his own studio in Milan in 1947. He later moved to New York in 1956, where he worked under the designer George Nelson. Upon his return to Italy, Sottsass collaborated with Poltronova in 1957 and Olivetti in 1958, before working with Superstudio and Archizoom Associati during the Radical Architecture movement in the late 60s and 70s. In 1981, he co-founded the Memphis group. Sottsass won numerous international awards, including the 1959 ADI Compasso d'Oro Award, and his works are now part of the permanent collections in various museums worldwide. This wooden photo frame for Il Sestante was created based on the model of the whistle ceramics in 1962, as seen in F. Ferrari's Ettore Sottsass, Tutta la ceramica, Allemandi, 1996, p.103. It is in good condition and fully original, presented in an aesthetically pleasing manner.
