By rotating around its central pivot, the Serpente floor lamp morphs into different shapes while retaining its unassuming appearance. Elio Martinelli drew inspiration from both the unpredictable contours of nature and the precision of geometry in crafting this design. Remarkably, Martinelli employed innovative methacrylate moulding techniques to create the lamp's smooth, circular plastic shade - a pioneering feat at that time. The Serpente, conceived in 1965, predicted the advent of other plastic icons like the Plia chair (1969) and Panthella floor lamp (1971), ushering in a new era of plastic in the seventies.
