DS-600, a flexible modular system of upholstered furniture designed in 1972, is composed of individual armchair elements that can be added as desired. The armchairs feature an L-shaped hard foam core covered with a leather-covered cushion filled with down. The elements are connected using a hide structure and zipper hinge. Additionally, a stool complements the well-known snake-shaped seat with an intermediate and end element. The longest DS-600 can be found in the home of a sultanate's ruling family, consisting of 406 upholstery elements in rainbow colors, forming a circular or serpentine sofa. This famous sofa, known as the "Tatzelwurm," has made appearances in the living rooms of Tina Turner, Jerry Hall, and Mick Jagger, as well as several Bond films. The idea of a curved sofa was original and innovative, but creating a producible item proved challenging. The designer collective worked closely with the De Sede development team for a year, crafting countless prototypes, most of which were rejected. However, the designers persisted, and DS-600 gradually became the indestructible, modular system it is today. This particular model, DS/600 Combination B, is made of nappa leather and consists of one module/19, modules/17, and one module/20. It is available in other upholstery options, such as Living, Touch, Naturale, Club, Coloral, Craft, Velour, Cirrus, and Cumulus, as well as different structural versions. The leather used in this model is lightly pigmented and measures 1.2 to 1.4 mm in thickness, displaying natural creases, grain, and pores. After tanning, it is dyed with a special finish to maintain its natural appearance while also providing increased protection. It undergoes visible aging, resulting in an endearing patina.
