The Eames & Saarinen "Organic Chair", a highly sought-after collectible, was the victorious product of the Organic Design competition held at the Museum of Modern Art. This exceptional piece was first produced in the early 1950s with a laminated and moulded wooden seat shell, foam upholstery, and a unique patented joint to firmly attach the wood legs to the shell. The textile fabric for the upholstery was designed by Marli Ehrman. The original Organic Chair submissions also included an armchair, a high-back chair, a sofa, and office furniture in the form of drawings. The competition was established in 1940 to encourage modern furniture development for contemporary lifestyles, and the dynamic duo of Saarinen and Eames won the top prize. While production only began in 1950, true-to-prototype scale models were not created. During the chair's development, aluminum legs were intended, but wartime shortages necessitated a switch to wood. Advances in technology allowed for a seat shell crafted of veneer strips, producing a comfortable and sturdy piece that still remained lightweight. This design served as the foundation for many of their future successes, including Eames' renowned "Wire Shell" and "La Fonda", as well as Saarinen's "Tulip Chair". The "Organic Chair" is a testament to the beauty inherent in functional design, as described by competition instigator Elliot Noyes. This particular piece is in exceptional original condition and originated from a personal collection acquired in the 1950s.
