This charming lounge chair, beautifully designed by Eero Saarinen between 1946 and 1948, is a special request by Florence Knoll - an incredible woman with a thirst for innovation and comfort. Tired of rigid chairs that offered no room for movement, Florence wanted a chair that resembled a warm basket full of soft cushions where one could cuddle up and relax. This early model of the 'Womb' chair is a rare find, with a metal shell instead of fiberglass and a unique backrest opening. We recommend reupholstery before use as the original fabric may have some wear and tear. Eero Saarinen's impressive career as an architect and designer has truly shaped the American postwar architecture. His work consisted of designing airports and working for major corporations such as IBM and General Motors. Saarinen's reputation was built upon his design identity that became synonymous with his clientele. His innovative designs were very popular among companies and individuals, and played a critical role in creating the aesthetic landscape of America during the 50s and 60s. Knoll International is a company founded in 1938 by Hans Knoll, a young German furniture manufacturer. After Hans' tragic death, his wife Florence Knoll had an immense impact on the company, working alongside talented designers like Eero Saarinen, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Richard Schultz, and Harry Bertoia. Florence's vision turned the company into what it is today, creating some of the most iconic designs in furniture history.
