The set of 'Conference' armchairs, designed by Eero Saarinen for Knoll International, were created in 1957 and were originally commissioned for the UNESCO Headquarters in Paris. The sled base of these chairs features a trapezoidal shape and a back with an open structure that smoothly transitions into the armrests, providing comfortable support for the arms. The seat is upholstered in a black and white checkered pattern fabric. Only 800 of these chairs were produced exclusively for the UNESCO project, furnishing the main conference room and some work areas in the building. Each armchair has a label with a unique UNESCO serial number attached. These chairs are available in good, used condition and can be reupholstered before shipping by our experienced in-house restoration team. We ask that you reach out to our design experts for more information about the restoration options available. Knoll International was founded in 1938 by Hans Knoll and was later managed by his wife Florence Knoll, who collaborated with renowned designers including Eero Saarinen. Saarinen, a Finnish-American architect, was known for his progressive and optimistic designs, shaping the American postwar architecture of the time. His designs were used in many corporate and residential spaces, helping to define the aesthetic landscape of the United States in the 1950s and 1960s.
