Eero Saarinen designed the Womb lounge chair and ottoman for Knoll in 1946 at the request of Florence Knoll, who desired a chair that resembled a basket filled with pillows - a cozy place to curl up. The resulting design, known as the No. 70 "Womb" chair, is a stunningly sculptural and exceptionally comfortable chair that has become a prized collectible in the mid century modern style. Saarinen drew inspiration from shipbuilding technology, fashioning a single-piece fiberglass shell seat with foam padding and upholstery that sits upon a sleek polished chrome tubular steel frame. This particular vintage Womb set, complete with original Knoll Associates sticker, dates back to circa 1960. The lounge chair measures W 40" x D 36" x H 36" with a seat height of 17.5" and arm height of 20.5", while the ottoman measures W 25.5" x D 20" x H 16".
