Charlotte Perriand's Shelving Unit, originally designed in 1952-56, was relaunched by Cassina in 2012, and is now being manufactured in Italy. The Nuage à Plots is an archetypal piece of furniture that interprets space in a unique way. The bookcase is rhythmic in design, with a system of shelves and vertical elements that are connected and held together with tensioning rods and fixing anchors to form a modular piece of furniture. The design is inspired by a series of floating shelves mounted on the walls of the Imperial Palace in Kyoto. This updated model of the bookcase is differentiated from the original by the single 33.5cm depth of the top and the aluminum plots, which are left exposed without sliding doors, crafted from a single piece of curved aluminum that replace the classic sides and back, serving as vertical elements to separate the shelves. The design is based on alternating negative and positive spaces, of wood and aluminum, of hot and cold. This versatile piece can be either feet or wall-mounted and has been a source of inspiration for generations of designers.
