The Chair designed by Charlotte Perriand in 1927 was re-launched in 1978 and is now manufactured by Cassina in Italy. As part of the LC collection by Le Corbusier, Pierre Jeanneret, and Charlotte Perriand, this iconic chair has a versatile and functional design. Originally created for Perriand's apartment in Paris, the LC7 was first exhibited at the 1928 Salon des Artistes Décorateurs and later formed part of a collection co-created by Perriand, Le Corbusier, and Jeanneret at the Salon d'Automne in 1929. The chair is available in leather or fabric upholstery and a four- or five-leg configuration, with polyurethane and padded polyester filling for back and seat. There is also an outdoor version made of stainless steel and polyester upholstery. In 2016, the LC7 structure was updated to obtain Italian CATAS certification. Charlotte Perriand, born in 1903 in Paris, attended the E'cole de l'Union centrale des Arts décoratifs from 1920-1925. She designed furniture made of anodized aluminum and chromium-plated steel and collaborated with Le Corbusier and Jeanneret until 1937. She showed her own work solo at the Union Des Artistes Modernes in 1931. During World War II, Perriand became a design consultant for the Japanese Board of Trade and lived in Japan until 1946. Her designs reflect Japanese aesthetic influences, as shown in the 1953 chair "Synthe'se des Arts." Cassina, the manufacturer, has created the I Maestri collection, revisiting furnishing designs by some of the 20th century's best-known architects, including Le Corbusier, Perriand, and Pierre Jeanneret. While preserving the designs and functional concepts, Cassina uses evolved technology to manufacture the models. The company has manufactured iconic contemporary design pieces since the 1950s and continues to look to the future with an open, holistic approach to design. The Cassina Perspective concept furnishes living and dining spaces completely and iconically, allowing for innovative combinations of modern icons that create authentic, welcoming, personal atmospheres.
