The Charlotte Perriand-designed 5-door "Bloc" cabinet, created for Cité Cansado in Mauritania circa 1958, has been edited and released by Galerie Steph Simon. Composed of coreboard shelves with various wood veneers, the cabinets are backed and braced with black lacquered sheet metal to ensure rigidity. Perforated side panels accommodate shelves and high-impact polystyrene drawers in red, yellow, gray, or black. The melamine-over-masonite sliding doors facilitate silent movement, and ample storage space was fundamental to Perriand's belief in rational storage. The "Create emptiness" philosophy allowed her to liberate space, ensuring freedom and movement. Measuring 99" x 30 1/2" x 18 1/2" and crafted from ribbon mahogany, lacquered metal, metal legs, and melamine over masonite, the cabinet is in original condition, complete with patina and adjustable wood shelves. The legs may have chips and loss of lacquer, as expected with age, but remain untouched and unrestored. The cabinet's provenance stems from Cité Cansado in Mauritania, and it has been featured in Jacques Barsac's book, "Charlotte Perriand, L'Oeuvre complete, Vol.3: 1956-1968."
