Sophisticated and simplistic, yet still striking. The LCW chairs, designed by Charles and Ray Eames for Herman Miller in the 90s, have been given a fresh update in a sleek matte black finish. This exclusive, limited edition release from ABT Modern is certainly something to consider. The LCW, part of the renowned plywood series, was the first abbreviated Eames chair. Standing for Lounge Height (L), Side Chair (C) on Wood (W) Base, it was constructed using a revolutionary technique developed during the war years, which was evident in the Eames Splint used by the US Navy. Five layers of plywood were glued and heated using a specialist machine to bend the wood into the sleek design. The LCW was a stunning combination of five individual molded plywood forms, resulting in a visually pleasing and innovative design for the post war period. The chair featured two curved legs of different sizes, a formed spine, and a backrest and seat fixed to the support via rubber shock mounts. Originally developed between Charles Eames and the Evans Molded Plywood Division, Herman Miller later became involved in distribution and ultimately bought the rights to the whole catalog, leading to an incredible design partnership. Although available in varying wood veneers and colors, the basic upholstery was improved upon by Herman Miller, especially with the help of designer Alexander Girard. Despite a decline in demand for plywood furniture in the 1950s, Herman Miller continued to produce the LCW until it was discontinued in 1957. However, it was re-commissioned in 1994 and remains available today.
