Presented here is a stunning vintage Eames 670 lounge chair and 671 ottoman in a vibrant blue leather for Herman Miller. The seat frame consists of walnut and aluminum 5 prong base with black painted lower and black shaft while the ottoman boasts a Rosewood frame, 4 prong base with black painted lower, and black shaft. This set is considered married, as discussed further in the NOTE section below. While it is in beautiful condition, please bear in mind that it is a vintage piece and will exhibit signs of wear and use. This particular set has some wear and tear, so if you're seeking perfection, this may not be the one for you. The chair's frame has been oiled and all parts have been cleaned and reassembled. The leather has also been repaired, with some buttons repaired using leather from underneath the arms. We reinforced the leather by attaching canvas to the underside, as there were several scrapes and cuts present in the original leather. We even mixed a matching leather coloring to use on the worn areas and conditioned it afterward. The ottoman had some minor chip repairs to the Rosewood shell, so please refer to the photos and zoom in for a closer look. We try to showcase any imperfections to the best of our ability. This set dates back to the 20th century. NOTE: Although cushions are feather-filled and the wood is 5 ply rosewood, with screw-on feet and matching second-gen clips, the seat, arms, back, and ottoman cushions and ottoman base are designated as 2nd generation. However, the arms have only three upper arm screw holes, which is indicative of 1st generation. This is somewhat of a puzzle, but it adds to the set's intrigue. The chair itself and its wood portions and base are 5th generation, determined by the walnut 7 ply frame with a stamped date of March 29, 1999, but the cushion clips resemble 2nd generation clips, adding further mystery. This is a piece to appreciate, study, and love for its distinct charm. Without further ado, we present to you the chair and ottoman set of a lifetime! This iconic mid-century modern piece is the brainchild of Charles and Ray Eames, and the result of years of extensive research. It was initially manufactured by Herman Miller in 1956 and was highly acclaimed, having been premiered to the public on NBC's Home show, with the Eameses interviewed by Arlene Francis. It was presented with lights, curtains, and all the bells and whistles! If you search online, you can find the unveiling and watch it for yourself. This specific set has a bright blue leather and removable seat and back with button details, a walnut frame, and a black shaft. The chair features the renowned 5 prong base with a brushed aluminum top and black painted lower base, while the ottoman has a removable cushion, 4 prong base with brushed aluminum top, black painted lower base, and black shaft. We debated selling the ottoman and chair separately since the wood does not match, but in our opinion, they were brought together and married at some point and have likely been through a lot together over the years. Marriage requires commitment, and that did not feel right! Plus, what's a little "generation gap" when it comes to a good marriage? Seriously though, the different stages in the life of this "pair" are endearing, and we wanted to preserve its originality, making it a cherished item that can be passed down through generations. VIntage pieces hold so much adventure and history, and the thought of sitting in this chair and experiencing the joy that Charles and Ray Eames would feel knowing they had contributed to it is truly incredible. Please refer to the note above for further details on this set. Charles Eames was born in St. Louis, Missouri, in 1907, while Ray Kaiser Eames was born in Sacramento, California, in 1912. They met at Cranbrook Academy of Art in Michigan and got married in 1941. They relocated to California, where they continued their design work that they began at Cranbrook. During WWII, they received a commission from the government to produce molded plywood splints and stretchers, which led to their mid-century modern furniture range, which is still as popular today. Herman Miller and their association with the Eames couple were a match made in heaven. If you want to learn more about Charles and Ray, please visit the official Eames website. Herman Miller originally began as Star Furniture Co. in Zeeland, Michigan, in 1905 and produced high-quality furniture. The company name changed to Michigan Star Furniture Co. in 1919 and was renamed Herman Miller Furniture Company in 1923 when long-time employee Dirk Jan De Pree and his father-in-law purchased 51% of the company's stock. The company remained Herman Miller Furniture Company until the 1960s, when it became Herman Miller, Inc. Until the 1930s, they exclusively produced traditional wooden furniture, but the Great Depression called for a change, and they recruited Gilbert Rohde, a modernist, who initiated the company's successful new direction. After Rohde's death in 1944, he was replaced by the renowned George Nelson. Nelson worked with the likes of Charles and Ray Eames, Isamu Noguchi, Alexander Girard, and Robert Propst, among others, and under his tenure, Herman Miller became a leader in furniture and design. This is probably the most recognizable chair in history, epitomizing mid-century modern excellence! Furthermore, this set is BLUE!
