The initial version of the Eames ESU D-10-N desk, crafted from birch plywood and featuring zinc plated steel as well as lacquered gray and white masonite panels, was created in 1950/1951. Although it was only manufactured for a brief two-year period, the design was later modified and reintroduced in 1952. These desks were shipped fully assembled by Herman Miller, and the large packaging boxes were thoughtfully designed to be repurposed as playhouses for children. An indicator of their maker, the decal reading "Designed by Charles Eames, Herman Miller Furniture Company, Zeeland Michigan" was affixed to the interior panel.
