In 1941, Charles and Ray tied the knot and relocated to California where they pursued their furniture design work by utilizing molded plywood. During World War II, they were commissioned by the Navy to manufacture molded plywood splints, stretchers, and experimental glider shells. In 1946, Evans Products entered the picture and began producing the Eameses' innovative molded plywood furniture, which earned critical acclaim from influential architectural critic Esther McCoy who dubbed it "the chair of the century." Following that, Herman Miller, Inc. took over production and has continued making the furniture in the United States ever since. Additionally, the furniture is manufactured in Europe by VItra International. The Eameses remained active in furniture design throughout the 1970s, creating beloved pieces like the molded plastic or fiberglass chairs in the early 1950s and the iconic Lounge Chair and Ottoman in 1956. During the 1960s, they also fashioned durable, comfortable, and chic office furniture and seating suited for Dulles and O'Hare Airports, including the enduring Tandem Sling Seating that is still employed throughout airports around the globe. Adding to their vast repertoire of furniture designs is the Eames Aluminum Group desk chair on a 4-star base, an innovative piece created in 1958 and recently restored to boast a ribbed stitched mint leather seat that is height adjustable and an ebonized aluminum frame. Currently, there are four such chairs available for purchase.
