In 1983, Karl Lagerfeld took over as the creative head of CHANEL with a mission to pay tribute to the iconic 2.55 bag created by its namesake founder. Lagerfeld embarked on his own interpretation of the bag, resulting in two significant updates that have become equally iconic: a chain strap intricately woven with leather and an interlocking CC fastening. This particular version of the black diamond-quilted bag features an additional flap, named after Lagerfeld himself, positioned beneath the larger exterior flap. Rumor has it that Coco Chanel used the zip pocket on this flap to conceal love letters. Each handcrafted piece is meticulously made by skilled artisans with a minimum of 4 years of training, taking a total of fifteen hours and 180 steps to complete, at CHANEL's Ateliers de Verneuil-en-Halatte.
