The Delfi dining table, originally designed by Marcel Breuer in the 1930s, was reworked by Carlo Scarpa for industrial production by Italian manufacturer Studio Simon in 1969. Made from white Naxos marble, the table was originally made from three separate pieces, which Scarpa modified minimally to give it a more rationalist design and enhance its poetic presence. Scarpa was an architect and designer born in Venice in 1906, who worked extensively on renovations, museum layouts, and furniture design throughout his career. In the 1950s, he won the Olivetti award for architecture and worked on significant projects such as the Padiglione del Libro bookshop and the Fondazione Querini Stampalia. In 1969, Scarpa was commissioned to design the Brion Mausoleum in San VIto d'Altivole, which occupied his attention until his death in 1978. Scarpa made important contributions to the world of applied arts, working for glassmakers Cappellin and Venini and designing furniture pieces such as the Doge, Sarpi, and Florian tables in collaboration with Dino Gavina. The Delfi table is one of Scarpa's most notable furniture designs, showcasing the designer's skill in transforming a classic piece into a modern masterpiece.
