In the 1930s, Gio Ponti created sketches of glass obelisks which he gave to Paolo Venini. Shortly after, Carlo Scarpa designed a torqued obelisk using transparent diamante glass. This glass was known for its diagonal striations and diamond-like appearance. The product line was introduced at the 1934 Venice Biennale and expanded for the 1936 Milan Triennale. Prior to this, Venini was known for their colored glass products. However, with the introduction of the diamante line, they began to compete with other transparent glass makers such as Steuben, Baccarat, and Lobemeyer.
