The 'Toledo' bed, created by the esteemed Italian master Carlo Scarpa, is a testament to his architectural studies and unmistakable design style. With a focus on geometric shapes and sturdy constructs, the circular stretchers of the bed frame are organized both horizontally and vertically to create a linear and visually striking composition. The round edges, however, balance out the otherwise heavy and robust look of the bed, while delicate lines executed in lighter wood add a touch of finesse. The headboard is a study in understated elegance, crafted from stiff cognac leather and spanning between the rear legs. Scarpa's excellent choice of materials and precise craftsmanship are evident in every aspect of this design. Carlo Scarpa is widely regarded as one of Italy's most important modernist architects and designers. Born in Venice in 1906, his groundbreaking work was heavily informed by his studies in architecture at the local Academy of Fine Arts, where he later taught. Scarpa's sensitivity to materiality and incredible detailing skills led him to work with master glass workers in Murano, and eventually secure a position as creative director at Venini Glass. His international recognition began to grow after World War II, with his designs taking inspiration from the likes of Frank Lloyd Wright and Japanese art. Scarpa's untimely death in 1978 did not detract from his legacy as his designs continue to influence and inspire creators around the world.
