This is a set of five dining chairs designed by Carlo Scarpa for Italian manufacturer Bernini in 1977. The chairs, called "Kentucky," are made of oak and walnut timber with cognac leather seats and backrests. They are in excellent vintage condition. Scarpa designed the chair for the "Scuderia" series, his last project for Bernini, and was inspired by the Shaker movement. The chair is slightly inclined at the front to allow for comfortable balance while leaning back. Scarpa was born in Venice in 1906 and started working as an architect at a young age. He worked on various projects, including renovations of Venice's Cà Foscari and the Fondazione Querini Stampalia, and museum layouts in Possagno, Palermo, and Verona. He also designed furniture for Murano glassmakers Cappellin and Venini, and collaborated with Dino Gavina to produce designs for Gavina SpA and SIMON. Some of his notable furniture designs include the "Doge," "Cornaro," and "Rialto" tables, and the "Toledo" bed.
